When we first hear from a potential bride to be about hiring us to be their wedding band for their reception, one of the things we always encourage is for them to come out to a local event and check us out before they make a commitment. This may seem counter-intuitive to vendors who are interested in a quick hard sell, but that’s not really our style. When you hire Fun DMC, you’re asking us to be responsible for almost every facet of the reception’s events – entrances, dinner music, announcing the serving schedule, having microphones on hand for toasts, making sure the first dance is lit correctly for the photos, etc.

We talk a lot about being confident in the band you hire a lot here, and we feel like we do a good job in setting couples at ease when we talk to them about what they had in mind.   We typically don’t like to take a contract/deposit until we have had time to sit down with the bride and groom-to-be (we have a regular table at Starbucks) and make sure they don’t have any additional questions about us, about the process, about the service itself, or even the contract before they sign. Hiring a band (and every other vendor, really) can be a costly endeavor and we don’t feel comfortable taking money unless we’re sure we can deliver on what we are promising and that you believe that.

Try Before You Buy

There are understandably those who want to see us before committing to a deposit/contract with us. We get it – a band can look good online or be a good salesperson at an expo, but in reality could be completely different than what you were expecting. We probably won’t be wearing our Sunday best to play a show at a local club, but otherwise we like to think that we present ourselves pretty accurately to what one can expect at a wedding reception. We keep our lyrics at PG-13 at best (and quickly go down to PG if the situation calls for it!) and are a pretty clean-cut group. Heck, if you look at what we do during the workday, you can get a good idea of the type of band you’re going to hire. We pride ourselves on being professional, both onstage and off.

That said, we still think it’s important for a couple to see us perform before playing. We’ve had people all but ready to sign a contract come to a show and change their minds because we weren’t the right fit for their event for one reason or the next. We’ve also had people that we’ve never previously talked to hand us deposits during our set break. Either way, we want to meet you in advance and talk to you about what you envisioned for your special day. Whenever someone meets us at an expo or fills out our contact form and begins the conversation with us, we always encourage them to let us know what show they might be coming to. If there’s an admission price, we make sure to get them on the guest list and reserve a table so they have a good spot to enjoy the show. This also gives us an area to sit and talk with them on break and have them meet the entire band.

Of course, this won’t give a couple an entirely accurate picture of what we can offer as a wedding reception band since we typically don’t do toasts or father/daughter dances when we play at a local club. But it at least serves as an opportunity for a couple to get familiar with who we are and what we do onstage.
