Memphis On Main in Champaign in the Rain

On Good Friday evening, Fun DMC made their way over to the east side of Illinois to take the stage at Champaign’s historical, Memphis On Main. As it happened, the band arrived just in time to be greeted by the very definition of an April shower. However, in the spirit of Barnum & Bailey, the show goes on and the band prevailed over the nefarious elements.
Never to pass up on local dining recommendations, the soggy band ventured over to the Black Dog Smoke & Ale House for BBQ and band-bonding. While the food was amazing, we recommend you arrive as early as possible before they run out of burnt ends and ribs (sorry Talon).
As honored as we were to entertain in the same venue where rock legends REO Speedwagon got their start, equally as splendid was sharing the evening with one of Champaign-Urbana’s premier acts, 90’s Daughter. In addition to Tom, Amy, Guido, and Stephen, the modest stage also included a keyboard rig, a horn section, extra guitarists, and a revolving door of incredible vocalists who made up what was known as The Memphis On Main House Band. Of the many incredible moments the MoM band brought to the stage, perhaps none was more memorable than Brandon T. Washington’s cover of the George Michael classic, “Freedom! ’90.”
Fun DMC took the stage around 11:00 pm and cranked out two hours of mashup up fury, dancing the night away with patrons of Memphis On Main.
The band closed the door on the trailer around 2:15 a.m. and aimed it west, hoping to make it to the Springfield city-limits before the first edges of daylight emerged in our rear view mirror. Good Friday was but a memory but judging from the amount of Diet Peach Snapple in Thornton’s display case, the Good Lord was still looking out for us.
