What’s The Most Overplayed Song In History?
Posted by Fun DMC on April 1st 2017
While getting songs selected with guest vocalists for our upcoming Fun DMC and Friends event at the Curve Inn next week, I noticed that we have learned a lot of songs over the past 3 years. Our set list is constantly evolving and changing and we’re always learning new songs, but between seeing old video of us at the Burger Bar last week and dusting off some retired tracks for this upcoming show, it really struck me how many songs actually go into the mashups and medleys we do.
That said, in order to keep the dance floor hopping and drinks flowing at club and wedding receptions, it’s important for these songs to be recognizable by the majority of attendees and – maybe even more importantly – be danceable and catchy. This means we are constantly keeping our ear close to the radio and billboard charts to see what’s trending and what songs might fit well with another. Unfortunately, with radio being what it is, many of these songs over the past 30+ years go from being earworms that you can’t get enough of to annoying songs that you being to hear in commercials, in restaurants, at karaoke, and everywhere else you hear music. This can last for years and it doesn’t seem to matter if it’s a one-hit wonder or an established artist – some songs just get overplayed past the point of tolerance.
So, I scoured the net and found what a majority of people find to be the most overplayed songs in history. This is by no means definitive, doesn’t speak to how good/bad the song is, and certainly doesn’t reflect Fun DMC’s opinions about the songs (of which it looks like we play the majority of), but just for fun, I included each member’s answer as well as the top ones I found online. Enjoy!
