Rage Against Vanessa Carlton (Rage Against the Machine vs Vanessa Cartlon)

Sometimes a good mashup idea is so simple and perfect that it doesn’t take a lot of musical know-how to turn it into something incredible. Lobsterdust’s Stayin’ Hot, one of the most well-known mashups in the genre, is a great example of this. It doesn’t take much adjustment aside from syncing up the key/beats-per-minutes and cutting and pasting around. However, sometimes you can tell when there’s a musician behind a mashup because there are so many perfect, subtle moments in a track.
Having made a huge amount of mashups myself and being very familiar with the acapella track for Killing In The Name Of, I can’t even begin to imagine how long it took to process the vocals and get them to sit perfectly over A Thousand Miles. While masters like DJ Cummerbund do a lot of vocal work, usually with tuning and harmonizing, Groboclone, who it looks to be is just getting into this, took a lot of time lining things up melodically and doing work on the tuning and effects to get everything to match up, particularly on Tom Morello’s whammy-wah solo. I can’t wait to see what comes next out of Groboclone.
