Name: Aaron Stanley
Location: Decatur, IL
Band: Fun DMC
What got you started playing bass?
I grew up in a musical family and my dad usually had a guitar or bass lying around. I had taken piano and saxophone lessons when I was younger, but I started teaching myself bass early high school.
What bass players inspire you?
Robert Sledge from Ben Folds Five, Tony Kanal from No Doubt, Matt Sharp from Weezer, Matt Wong from Reel Big Fish, David Gerkin from The Red Hot Valentines, Rob Pope from The Get Up Kids
What song has challenged you the most?
Probably the live version of One Angry Dwarf and 200 Solemn Faces by Ben Folds Five, about anything we’ve done by Muse (just as much tone as playing), playing bass line of Cake’s I Will Survive at 120 bpm, and that stupid, stupid bridge to Salvation Is Here by Hillsong.
What’s your favorite song to play in your current band’s set?
For strictly playing, probably the I Will Survive/Survivor mashup we started doing recently. For overall performance, Born This Way/Fortunate Son is raw energy.
What’s the most overplayed song?
Don’t Stop Believin’.
What’s the most memorable thing that happened to you at a gig?
Decatur Celebration 2017 was a pretty big moment. Playing our songs to a sea of thousands and thousands of people that you couldn’t see the end of was surreal.
What’s your current rig?
American Fender Jazz Bass
Line 6 Pod HD Pro X
Sennheiser EW 172 Wireless Guitar Unit
Westone AM Pro 30 In-Ear Monitors
Sitting in the trailer is an Ampeg SVT-7PRO and a 410HE if we ever need it, but now that I’ve been direct with the Line 6 unit for over a month, I see no signs of going back to a live amp anytime soon.
