The Anatomy Of A Mashup
Posted by Fun DMC on April 19th 2016
Since 2013, Fun DMC has been setting the standard in live entertainment as the Midwest’s premiere mashup band. Finding its roots in early hip-hop sampling and even the studio wizardry of Frank Zappa, the mashup genre has exploded in recent years with the emergence of such notable artists as Girl Talk, DJ Lobsterdust, and even the cast of Glee. While mashups have long been a staple of the DJ arsenal, we at Fun DMC has excelled in bringing the art form to the live stage. Our blend of creative and often audacious medleys and mashups have set us apart in a way that engages our fan base and keeps them coming back time and time again to witness what we will dream up next. Whether it’s a blending of Journey and Metallica or even Nelly VS The Bee Gees, you can be sure that every Fun DMC show will bring you only the best in mashup alchemy.
What Makes A Mashup?
We are often asked “how in the world do you come up with these?” While some trails have been blazed by the creativity of certain DJs, the truth is there are common elements that make up the majority of pop music. Our job is, quite simply, active listening. Common hooks, chord progressions, beats per minute, and even melodies all play a part in the make up of a song. Some of our most satisfying moments are taking two completely different songs from opposing genres and finding the common thread that weaves them together in a way that is both familiar and brand new to the listener. Who knew that the works of Lynyrd Skynyrd and Tupac could collide, resulting in a brand new entity that fills the dance floor night after night? With all of these common elements and so much uncharted territory yet to be explored, it’s anyone’s guess what the crew at Fun DMC will come up with next. Guess you’ll have to find us at our next show to find out.
