Black Friday at The Blue Grouch – A Retrospective
Posted by Robert Reynolds on November 30th 2016
In the middle of the holiday weekend, Fun DMC managed to fit a show into what has come to be known as capitalism’s greatest achievement: Black Friday. Traditionally known as the official beginning of the Christmas shopping season, Black Friday has expanded to include Thanksgiving Day, Cyber Monday, etc. For years, shoppers and would-be bargain seekers have formed long lines in the bitter cold sometimes days in advance in order to get their hands on the latest and greatest gadgets, tech, and toys of the season. Expounding on the morality of greed and affluence aside, needless to say, by the time the turkey and football have subsided and Friday night rolls around, most of us are desperately in need of a good old fashioned nap. Now I’m not sure what the people at The Blue Grouch were drinking last Friday night but it nap inducing it was not.
In addition to our usual shenanigans, Fun DMC broke out the latest in our arsenal of entertainment which included several light up hula hoops and two Skip-Its. By the time we reached the apex of our show, the dance floor had turned into a hyped up playground face off with many of our guests taking their best shot and often succeeding at not falling flat on their faces.
As we closed out the evening, Albert and Katey made their way to the front of the stage area for Gangnam Busters. While this moment is often accompanied by a group of willing dancers attempting to keep up with Albert and Katey, our Black Friday crowd took it to another level. Fun DMC extended family members Chad Kamerad and Liz Christofilakos walked to the front of the room and completely on-beat, began to do the Macarena. So if you are keeping track of the levels of mashup here, we have a band playing a mashup song that is associated with a particular dance while people are adding in their own dance that also works just as well. Before long, the entire bar had joined Chad, Liz, Katey, and Albert as they danced the Black Friday 2016 into the books. It was a show for the ages.
This week we have a three night run that includes The Curve Inn (A Toys For Tots Benefit with special guests #Smashtag and Lick Creek Country Band, Mowie’s Cue, and a wedding in Decatur. Then we have a few weeks off. Perhaps to relax, perhaps to dream up some more magic.
