Banks Wedding and The Springfield Lake Press Club

Did I mention that there were absolutely no lyrics for this song anywhere on the Internet? Yes that was the conundrum that Fun DMC ran into in preparation for the Banks wedding this past weekend. At this point in the game, and judging from a fairly large pool of experience, I think it’s safe to say that it’s a fairly even split between wedding clients whose planning is fairly typical and those who wish to travel outside of the box. For the Banks wedding, Fun DMC had been asked to perform the first dance song live, which is not an unusual request by any means. However, the song itself proved to be somewhat evasive. “Perfectly Imperfect” by Ryan Hiraoka. Go ahead and Google the lyrics for that song. I’ll wait here in your browser’s other tab (hopefully you’re using Chrome because every other browser pales in comparison. Those extensions tho).
OK you’re back. I know, right? They don’t appear anywhere on the Internet. The song was obviously special to Josh and Emily and so we wanted to make sure that we performed it as recorded. And so began the arduous task for this author of listening to the song on repeat for almost 45 minutes and typing out the lyrics. I know, how very 1995 of me.
The band met up later that week for our first rehearsal of both “Perfectly Imperfect” as well as “My Wish” by Rascal Flatts. I was actually pretty excited about the second song. It was kind of fun to step out of the box and play a country guitar solo. That said, I was still kind of on the fence about this other obscure island love song.
The wedding day arrived and Fun DMC unlocked an achievement for one of the fastest load-ins and set-ups in band history. Our friends from Hubbard Photography were on site at the as well as Hamilton’s catering. Following introductions and a wonderful prime rib dinner, it was time for the first dance. We started “Perfectly Imperfect” and when I looked up to see the reaction of the bride and groom, that’s when it all clicked. As Albert sang the words, I could see the look of delight on Josh and Emily’s face. Though the song was new to us, it was obvious that it very much meant something to the bride and groom. And seeing that made the entire process worth it.
The next day, we again traveled out toward the lake, this time at Springfield’s Lake Press Club for the long awaited benefit for Jamie Kleimenhagen. Jamie suffered injuries from a collision with a freight train earlier this year (yes not many people get to say that) and is currently working his way back to recovery through physical therapy. We were recruited by The Mix‘s Billy Cooper to be part of the stellar lineup which included Capt. Quirk, The Mix, #Smashtag, and Winston’s Weekend. In spite of the torrential down pours the day before, Sunday turned out to be a lovely time spent lakeside doing what we love to do the most. It was a fantastic event that both Billy and Preston Searl put a lot of long hours into for both production as well as organization. We were honored to be a part of it.
Friday night will find the band at Weebles and Saturday night we will be at our very first HSHS St Johns Foundation Toast of the Town Waldober Fest (yes I didn’t believe it was real either). Additionally, in the coming weeks the band will be playing at the Bank of Springfield Center for the inaugural Illinois Times Best Of Springfield celebration as well as two Halloween shows with costumes and prizes. Stay tuned to our Facebook page for more information.
