Fun DMC: A Musical Journey featuring Talon Holmes
Posted by Fun DMC on July 23rd 2016
Over the next couple of weeks, the Fun DMC blog will feature a spotlight on each of its members and a bit on their musical journey and influences. Fun DMC is made up of a diverse group of musicians who cover a wide array of artists. The remarkable thing about this band is that you can take five different personalities with five very different musical backgrounds and channel that energy into a single idea. On stage we are one unit, bringing you the best in mashups and medleys. However, each member still retains their individual personalities and influences and that often surfaces during each performance. With that said, this is the first installment of Fun DMC: A Musical Journey.
Talon Holmes – Drums
I didn’t touch a drum kit until college, and even then it wasn’t a real kit. My first adventure into drumming started on the game Rock Band, which eventually transitioned into playing real drums. First on an electronic kit my parents bought me for christmas and then when i had enough money, my first acoustic kit.
My early influences definitely lie in the rock and metal genres as Metallica, Linkin Park and Disturbed occupied my playlists. And while I still like those bands, Alter Bridge has taken over as my favorite band. I think I’ve even subconsciously worked Scott Phillips’ (Alter Bridge drummer) style into my own playing. Avenged Sevenfold (The Rev, R.I.P) and Shaman’s Harvest are a couple other current favorites.
While I haven’t traveled far outside of Illinois, I have played at a couple Christian camp/retreats with Robert, Paige and Aaron either at Lake Springfield Baptist Camp or SKWIM in Green Lake, Wisconsin. And while the crowds aren’t large, they are some of the most fun gigs I have played.
I try to bring more rock-oriented drumming to Fun DMC. While we play quite a few pop songs, I try to incorporate a more rock based rhythm with the songs to give them a little more kick than usual. For the most part though, I do my best to keep a solid beat in the background to help hold the song together.
Fun DMC is not something I would have thought that I would be a part of back when I first started playing music. It has expanded my listening from what was almost exclusively rock and metal to include a little rap, hip-hop and pop and helped me to develop my drumming into broader categories. It’s incredibly different than what i grew up with but i enjoy it just as much.
